How to crossfade audio down to the audio track.
In almost every project, you may be faced with times where your adjacent clip had audio that was not usable or is non-existent, and you want to be able to cross fade the audio of your next clip up to match a video disolve. Trouble is, Edius will not allow you to crossfade to the audio track itself, and will not place a corresponding audio crossfade, when you do a video dissolve.

One way to solve the problem for an individual case, would be to "ungroup" the audio from the video, and stretch the audio portions out and do a physical adjustment to the audio track itself.

A better way way is to hold down your Alt key, and then stretch your audio track over. With the Alt key held down, you are able to adjust either the video or audio portion of a grouped clip independent of each other (or without affecting the other). You can then make your manual adjustment to the audio clip.
Perhaps the best solution is to apply "dummy" audio to your whole ambient audio track. When you start a new project, create a color matte, doesn't matter what color. (Find the Matte tool under the "Color bars" icon at top of Bin window).

Drag the matte to the timeline. Notice that the matte also has a track of blank audio. Right click on the matte, select "remove group" and delete the matte, leaving only the audio.

Using your mouse, select one end of the remaining audio and stretch it out as long as you like along the track that you will use for the ambient audio of your video clips.

Now, when you place clips on the time line that are adjacent to clips with no audio, Edius will give you a cross fade of audio whenever you add a dissolve transition to the video track.

If you are not getting automatic cross fades to audio when you add a dissolve, check your "Application Settings", under "Settings" Make sure that "Insert default crossfade in transition" is checked.
