Can I delete media from my hard drive from inside Edius?

My hard drive is getting full and I want to delete some clips to make room. When I delete a clip from my bin window it deletes the clip from the project but not from my hard drive. Is there a way that I can delete clips from my project AND my hard drive at the same time?

Yes. Right click on a clip in the bin window and select "Delete File", (not "Delete")

As a part of my workflow, I have a folder in my bin window labeled "trash". When ever I preview a clip that I know that I will never use, I drop it into the trash folder. Then once a day, or at the end of a session, I will open up the trash folder, select all, right click on any one of the clips, and "take out the trash" with "Delete File".

Please Note: If you have stumbled on to this article and you are working with Edius 6.0x, a major change was made in version 6.  Edius 6.0x will not allow you to delete any files from the bin window that are not also included inside your project folder.  If you see the frustrating "greyed out" link "Delete File", the files that you are trying to delete are likely stored somewhere other than inside your project folder.  Kind of crazy, I know!

Somewhere along the way, some Edius editors (probably some Wedding producers) must have advised the software developers that it would be a good idea to start forcing Edius users to store all media related to a project inside the project folder.  While this may be a good idea for event producers, as a way to keep all of the media related to a project together for easy backup, it just is not practical for documentary producers, who will typically reference media shot over the last five years for each new project that they start.

We are hoping that GV/Canopus will, with a future release, change this inane policy and once again let us decide what, when and where we want to delete our media, from within the bin window!  At least give us a setting that we can switch on or off for this.   Do your "hand-holding" with event producers if you like, but give the rest of us our freedom back!
