How do I capture VHS or Hi8 tape into Edius?

I have a lot of old VHS tapes and Hi8 tapes that I would like to edit. How do I capture these tapes in to Edius?

The easiest way to capture the older analog tapes into Edius, is to purchase a analog to digital converter, such as this device by Grass Valley ADVC-55, Available from Guy Graphics.

If you have a DV deck or Camera, it is possible that you might be able to use this device to convert your analog signal. Many of the earliest DV models did not allow for an input signal, for widespread fear of piracy. But as the years went by, the industry realized that this was not much of a deterrent and started offering this feature to their devices. Check and see if your device allows for an analog signal input that can then be sent out of the firewire port. It is worth a shot!
